Since 2023, and every year thereafter, the Athina I. Martinou Foundation has been awarding 2 scholarships to newly enrolled students at the Merchant Marine Academies (M.M.A.) in each of the M.M.A. locations across Greece (Aspropyrgos, Epirus, Ionian Islands, Kalymnos, Crete, Kymi, Macedonia, Oinousses, Syros, Hydra, Chios, Lakonia). The scholarships cover annual living expenses for all six academic semesters (excluding the two semesters of on-board practical training).

The Program, designed for students of the Merchant Marine Academies, reflects Athina I. Martinou’s vision to promote Greek seamanship and maritime education. It supports, those who choose to pursue a career at sea- offering them equal opportunities every step of the way.

This specific Scholarships Program includes elements of social innovation in the field of maritime education, as there has been no other systematic awarding of scholarships to the entire network of Merchant Marine Academies by a institutional grantee.

Along with the scholarship awards, the Athina I. Martinou Foundation grants to Marine Merchant Academies for infrastructure projects, aim to meet existing needs and focus on improving the daily life of students who have chosen to follow a maritime profession.
