WWF Greece was founded in 1991 and is an independent Greek NGO, as well as an active member of the global WWF network.
The mission of WWF is to halt the degradation of the environment and build a future where people will live in harmony with nature, through: preservation of the planet’s biodiversity, sustainable use of renewable natural resources, reduction of pollution and consumption waste.
From 1991 until today, WWF Greece, extending its actions to specific areas pertaining to nature and mankind, has a marked presence in the “field” and environmental legislation, ensuring the appropriate institutional framework for the protection of important habitats and species in Greece. Over these 30 years, WWF, with the invaluable participation and collaboration of citizens, institutions and organizations, has designed and implemented a total of 240 programs, as well as more than 300 legal and administrative interventions concerning critical environmental issues.
Since its founding, WWF Greece has been clearly oriented towards protecting the country’s marine environment: protection of iconic species (sea turtles, seals, dolphins, porpoises, etc), alleviation of pressure from fishing, enactment and operation of Marine Protected Areas, response to immediate threats to marine and coastal biodiversity, and reduction of the footprint of consumption on the fish population. Today, WWF Greece implements actions across a broad spectrum of areas that pertain to the protection the marine environment.
The grant pertains to the implementation of a Programme for the reduction of marine pollution from single use plastics. This is a new project focused on advocacy, political pressure, and awareness-raising and mobilization of citizens, aimed at reducing marine pollution from single use plastics by 50% by 2030.
