Over the 15 years of its operation, the Laboratory has developed in the international and domestic field and is now considered as the largest and best equipped University teaching and research centre in the field of Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography, Coastal Geomorphology, and Environmental Oceanography.

For the implementation of a Program for the mapping of coralligenous formations
The grant pertains to the implementation of a program for the mapping of coralligenous formations in the Cyclades and the broader region of the South Aegean.
The research project will provide invaluable information regarding the spatial distribution of the seabeds, to subsequently define protection areas for these important refuges of life and endemism. The project includes: a. Collecting available spatial and qualitative data on rhodolithic seabeds across the Greek seas, b. Mapping rhodolithic formations in selected regions of the Cyclades, with the use of marine geophysical (echo sounding) methods, and c. Investigating the possibility of creating a small coralligenous formations observatory in the Cyclades.
The grant is implemented jointly with the Athanasios C. Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, under the umbrella of Initiative 21 (environment & climate change).
